Stalin’s Russia, 1950. Brilliant young artist Pasha Kalmenov is arrested and sent without trial to a forced-labor camp in the Arctic gulag. This is a camp like no other. Although conditions are harsh and degrading, the prisoners are not to be worked to death in a coal mine or on a construction project. Their task is to forge the drawings of Leonardo da Vinci.

Book review – The Gulag Archipelago – Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn [pub. 1974] The Gulag Archipelago by Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn is an account of the Soviet Union’s forced labour camp system. Apart from the prominence of ice and snow you probably think that it wouldn’t make ideal Christmas reading.

No one is capable of encompassing all this, of course, and it would merely be a bore to read whole volumes, writes Solzhenitsyn in midstream. This lengthy volume is not a bore; it is ultimately numbing.

The book is comprised of the authors own account of being imprisoned for ten years due to just knowing someone outside of Russia! It is also a compendium of some 200 other accounts of other people imprisoned, some killed. I’ll be honest at the beginning of this book review, The Gulag Archipelago is not a fun book to read.

Banished to a remote Siberian village in 1897, Lenin rented a comfortable room in a private home. He received books on loan from libraries in Moscow and St Petersburg, which he used in writing the study that made him a Marxian theorist, The Development of Capitalism in Russia (1899). This is an excellent book to read before reading Solzhenitsyn's Gulag Archipelago, because Applebaum presents the history of the Gulag's development and implementation in a way that amplifies Solzhenitsyn.
